The latest in Sony's line of DVCAM camcorders, the PDX10 provides a nice combination of features and picture quality in a palm-sized package. Improving on the DSR-PD100A, the new PDX10 is a native 16:9 camcorder with 3 0.21-inch CCDs, each with 1,070,000 pixels. The PD100A had to be content with 380,000 pixels and electronically processing for its widescreen images.

The PDX10 doesn't use all the pixels on each chip for 16:9 or 4:3 acquisition. In fact, still-image capture uses the most pixels (1 million) for acquisition. That said, Sony reports the camcorder uses 690,000 pixels per CCD for either 16:9 or 4:3 images.

Recently, I had the opportunity to test the DSR-PDX10 in Miami Beach, FL, before Sony conducted one of its 'Road Show' demonstrations. I had visions of bikini-clad fashion models basking in the sunshine and posing in the sand. Alas, a cold front swept in hours before I ventured onto the beach, the sky was overcast, and the models were fellow magazine editors. Welcome to my life.

Sony graciously sent us out with a number of Sony DVCAM camcorders, including the DSR-PD150 (another palmcorder), DSR-250 (the same optics as the PD150 but in a shoulder-mount design), and DSR-570WS (Sony's high-end shoulder-mount, 16:9 native DVCAM unit). I had an opportunity to shoot with all the units and review the footage, but I was particularly interested in putting this latest model through its paces. After all, it's the DVCAM camcorder with the lowest price tag in the group (MSRP $3,100), which immediately increases interest among those professionals in modest-sized or boutique production or post-production houses. Or, other pros just looking for something light and small to work with.

On the beach, with the clouds looming, the camera provided a nice contrast between sky and ocean, and close-ups of the local birds showed very clear details. When the bad weather passed, the camcorder really shined, as the colors of the beachfront buildings popped in the bright sunlight.

Beyond the beach, I had another demo unit shipped to my office. It comes with one battery, shoulder strap, lens hood, and remote control (with batteries). The PDX10 has a variety of video connections, and comes complete with AV connecting cable for composite output, USB cable, CD-ROM with USB driver, and even an 8 MB Memory Stick. But there's no cable included to take advantage of the S-Video output, and a cable for the IEEE-1394 (i.LINK) connection is not standard.

In less than two hours, the battery was fully charged and ready to go. I started with my office, a fluorescent light nightmare with white walls. The PDX10 maintained warm flesh tones, even when I tried to fool it by moving my subject near a window in late afternoon. I tested its limits outside at dusk — when the sun goes down, pull out the light kit.

While you can create a custom preset, as well as manually control iris, white balance, exposure, and shutter speed, the factory presets consistently produced excellent images. The camera automatically — and quickly — adjusted between outdoor and indoor lighting conditions.

The 12x optical zoom on the built-in lens was a bit sensitive to control. Also, the camcorder features a 24x and 48x digital zoom. When shooting people that were less than 150 feet away, the 24x image was a little soft, but a plane flying overhead looked just fine. Avoid using the 48x option — its pictures were noisy and blurry.

Be warned: You can see the zoom slow down slightly when the digital kicks in. Depending on the sophistication of your audience, it might not make a difference in your final project, but you might want to avoid a full-range zoom on camera (or switch off the digital zoom).

Professional Touches

By itself, the unit weighs less than three pounds and is as small and unassuming as most consumer palmcorders. In fact, the unit is manufactured by Sony's consumer division. But the PDX10 also comes with an XLR adapter with ECM-NV1 microphone and windscreen, which gives it a more professional look (and provides dual XLR inputs). The adapter also sports a shoe so you can attach a camera light.

Menu controls are extensive and can be accessed with a thumb wheel that's conveniently located on the back of the camcorder. Menu adjustments are a left hand task, because you can't reach the menu button with your right hand while shooting.

The professional needs are included — full-field color bars, image stabilization, a variety of fades, back light, and zebra. Plus, its on-board Memory Stick can be used to store still images, or the camera can save footage as an MPEG-1 file on the Memory Stick, so you can quickly upload low-res clips to your boss.

There are also a few rather nifty features. First, the LCD screen has touch screen control, so you can select between a handful of digital effects with your finger. I could have done without the 'trail' effect, but you never know when the inspiration for the sepia tones of an 'old movie' will strike. One problem, however, is that these digital effects are only accessible through the LCD screen, not the menu.

Then there's spot focus. Essentially, it allows focus pull with a touch on the LCD screen. You want the object in the foreground in focus, touch it on the panel. Then touch the object in the background and the camcorder automatically focuses again. It's rather difficult to keep the camera steady when you're pushing on the touch screen, but it's a promising feature I'd expect to be replicated in future Sony camcorders.

When you rotate the LCD screen completely around to face the talent, it can act as a built-in monitor. This is an important feature for one-man crews. The screen itself is bright and provides a clear image that can be manually adjusted, but falls victim to bright sunlight. An anti-glare panel would be a welcome upgrade.

By the way, with all these touch screen options, keep the supplied cleaning cloth nearby. Chances are you'll smudge the LCD screen as quickly as I did.

A Little Perspective

Sony probably doesn't want to read this, but I actually preferred the PDX10 to the PD150, which is a step up on the DVCAM food chain. The new camcorder 'fit' better in my hand and I was more comfortable using the LCD screen instead of the eyepiece. Yes, the CCD chips are bigger in the PD150, but I'll take the images from the PDX10, which uses more pixels for 4:3 and 16:9 imaging.

Clearly there must be boundaries to my enthusiasm. When I compared the 570WS image with the PDX10, the newbie was noticeably outmatched. Of course, the 570WS retails for more than four times the cost of the PDX10 — before lens — and boasts larger 2/3-inch CCD chips and about 300 more lines of resolution, so its dominance is expected.

When it comes to camcorders, you get what you pay for, but you're probably getting more for your money than what you'd expect from the DSR-PDX10. Except, of course, no shoulder mount.
